"A Creator of Beautiful Organic Forms"

- Dionissis Vovos-

Dionissis Vovos has a wealth of training and experience that he brings to every piece of fine jewellery that he creates with exquisite precision and detail.   The Tasmanian-based artist is of Greek heritage, born in Egypt where he lived until he was 16.   His father was jeweller and Dionissis was trained in Switzerland in jewellery making and design.

He travelled back to Hydra Island in Greece where he happily developed his skills and style in creating jewellery.   He later went to America and worked creating jewellery for some famous names, Sammy Davis Junior and Liberace to name a few.   He created a glittering Piano ring for Liberace and a large ring that Sammy Davis Jnr wore in the film; Cannon Ball Run, liking it so much he kept it after the film had concluded.

Dionissis has developed his own signature style, which are contemporary free flow organic forms that wrap around the body creating elegant decorative bracelet, necklaces, rings and earrings.   A tracery of gold and silver and soon to be black, light weight precious metals create easy to wear pieces.

Of all the pieces, he says he likes creating bracelets the most, with the free flowing forms lending themselves to being wrapped around an elegant wrist.   Dionissis takes his inspiration from branches, driftwood and the sea and all organic forms.   Cast in precious metals the pieces have a contemporary look which is perhaps derived from the fact that no two pieces are the same and that where possible he likes to use unusually shaped stones and pearls.   Depending on the design a piece can have a classic appeal or look more modern.   Dionissis often combines yellow gold and silver, making his pieces more affordable.   He aims to keep them in a medium price range for dress jewellery.

Since arriving in Tasmania in 1989 he first lived in Burnie and then later Hobart where he has been largely based at Salamanca for the last 20 years.   He has had a retail outlet there.   He is distributing his work across the mainland and overseas.   He travels to Greece every year, where he promotes his work.

Dionissis is unusual as a jeweller as he works straight into the piece of jewellery passing over the step of drawing and designing on paper.   He takes his inspiration from his surroundings and nature and he loves to use Australian Opals, white, cognac and champagne diamonds, pearls from Broome, South Sea Pearls and Tahitian Pearls.   His use of silver in his pieces makes them more accessible and very much in vogue at the moment.   Something new that he is developing is the tracery of his designs in black rhodium, a very sophisticated and stylised look.   First beginning with a modelling medium - then into wax cast - straight to the finished product, this is Dionissis's preferred method of working.

A true artist, he is always creating, always developing and always evolving.
